WOODWORK + DESIGN
Hamilton Hall Cypress Design is a custom woodworking studio, working primarily with cypress wood. Design style ranges from rustic (allowing the natural cypress characteristics to take center stage) to the refined (a minimalist/modern approach), or a combination of the rustic/refined aesthetics. Given the incredibly individual characteristics of each cypress tree, our design approach is best described as three-way collaboration among Hamilton, the commissioning client and trees used in the design.

ABOUT OUR SINKER CYPRESS
The Bald Cypress tree is often referred to as the wood eternal in woodworking circles -- it is an incredibly durable tree, both in its natural wetland habitat and as part of a manmade structure. Yet, the American cypress logging boom that began in 1890s was relatively brief. By 1925 it was essentially over with entire wetland forests decimated. Protected from logging now, the slow-growing cypress are long-living trees, with life spans often surpassing 600 years. The trees can reach heights of 120 feet, with trunks ranging from 3 to 6 feet in diameter.

Sinker cypress is the term for the lost cypress logs that have remained submerged in swamp waters since logging days. These trees were often 150 to 600+ years old when they were felled (older than most new-growth cypress standing today). With the combination of the tree age and submersion, sinker cypress is a very unique and rare wood with vast variations in texture. Sinker cypress has a color spectrum that includes shades of  golden tans/browns, warm cinnamon, and even reddish-orange hues.

At Hamilton Hall Cypress Design we source quality sinker cypress in various locations throughout Louisiana wetlands for our woodwork designs. Please see the cypress types page for more information about tree variation.
